Basic Sailboat Rules - Rule 10: On Opposite Tacks

When you sail, you have two possible position your sail can be on. Port or Starboard. So if your sails go to the left side of your boat that is starboard-tack and if your sails are on the right side of your boat then you have port-tack boat.


To get to a mark you will need to do both so will others sailing. So rule 10 says that the one that has Starboard-tack is the Right of way boat. Why? Well someone has to . Just like you driving your car, why do you drive in your country on the same side of the road? Well in sailing is the same.

Rule 10: On Opposite Tacks
When boats are on opposite tacks, a port-tack boat shall keep clear of a starboard-tack boat.


This rule works in all places. Before the start as well as during the race and towards the finish. You will notice that most racers will always start the race on starboard-tack. Now when in a race, look to see if you have starboard-tack. If so look at other boats that approach you and if they are on port-tack, and if your path and theirs will have a collision if you keep it, shout out ‘Starboard!!’ or ‘Stb’ to let other boat know that they must make sure to not collide with you. If they do not and looks like you will have a collision then you need to avoid them. Just like Rule 14 I've already written about. In that case you can have a valid Protest. I will cover this in a later article.


OK now all is good but what if the other boat that may collide with you has starboard-tack too?


Next time we will discuss what to do when boats are on the same tack and who has right of way. Yes there are rules for that too.

Basic Sailboat Rules - Rule 14: Avoiding Contact

OK so you have gotten your first boat in Second Life, you rezz it and start to colour it, texture it and do all you can to make that boat have all your preference and make it unique to you. Now lets take it out for a test sail.

Well at first you will need to understand the wind and how it will work on the sails to make it move. Once you have figured that out, then you are officially sailing. Yay!!!!!!!!!!!

So once you set out in your first solo sail, you get to a spot that has land, objects or in maybe sim edge and you are heading towards it, well you are probably going to change your course. If not well you would go nowhere and no longer move right? Yes. Congratulations. You have just passed your 1st lesson in sailing that is of avoiding contact.

Same applies when sailing with other boats. Each boats have to avoid collisions. One rule is that a sailboat have right of way over motor (power) boats. But still if a new motor boat owner not paying attention best to avoid them. Main thing is to always have full control of your boat at all times.

Rule 14: Avoiding Contact 
A boat shall avoid contact with another boat if reasonably possible. However, a right-of-way boat or one entitled to room or mark-room

(a) need not act to avoid contact until it is clear that the other boat is not keeping clear or giving room or mark-room, and


(b) shall be exonerated if she breaks this rule and the contact does not cause damage or injury.

Sailing in your first race if you don't know any rules this will be your main focus. So you will need to be in control of your boat at all times. That is key. If you see another boat approaching and looks like you are in a collision course the best to avoid it and keep clear.

You now say ok I get it, don't bump into other boats, but if all boat simply avoid contact then no one will win the race.

Next rules we will go over right of way for boats. Just like driving your car you need to follow rules. What side of the road to drive, a red street light etc. Same principles apply to sailing.
